MEC Paddlefest Vancouver

Beaches and sea are essential aspects of Vancouver’s character. In my not so humble opinion, if you live here and don’t get out on the water somehow, you’re missing a vital part of the Vancouver experience.  So I was really pleased to see huge and happy crowds celebrating the seaside nature of our city our recent MEC Paddlefest.

Summer got off to a pretty shaky start here on the Wet Coast, but we lucked in on some of the finest weather so far: warm and sunny, with just enough ocean breeze to keep you cool. That encouraged people to take demo boats out for test paddles and not to care if they did spectacular dismounts turning their first ever paddleboard voyages. A combination of dryland presentations and on-water clinics made sure there was something for everyone of every skill level. It was, as Wallace and Gromit would say, A Grand Day Out.

To the surprise of no-one who knows me, my presentation was about kayak sailing.

The folks from Baja Kayak Adventures treated us to a fabulous lesson on kayak expedition cookery, including a demo of how the Vortex hand cranked blender can let you enjoy fresh fruit smoothies even when the nearest AC outlet is days away.

My friends at the BC Marine Trails Network were there, as were our pals from CPAWS. A few photos from the day follow. And what did you get up to water-wise last weekend?
