A few weeks back, I dropped by to share the excitement of Vancouver’s first Big Chop paddle race of the season.
A full crowd of paddlers turned out, from serious Type-A competitors to first-timers who came purely for the social aspect and the sunshine.
The types of watercraft were equally varied: stable sea kayaks, outrigger canoes, SUPs, sleek and tippy surf kayaks, and even a superlight skin-on-frame canoe.
The starting horn sounded at 7pm and the rag-tag fleet was off.
The first boat from the Little Chop (the shorter course) crossed the finish line just under 24 minutes later.
Then it was back to the “pen” for beer, a BBQ meal, and eyeing the prize table.
You haven’t missed your chance to Chop: the races run every second Thursday from now ‘til the end of summer in Vancouver. Bring your own boat or rent one for cheap at the event. Get the details on the Big Chop site.
