Fresh water touches all of us. It’s where we play, recreate, feel alive, at home. MEC is standing up for fresh water, and we want to inspire you to do the same. – Post by MEC CEO David Labistour

We love fresh water. Lakes and rivers are an important part of our lifestyles, both as outsiders and as Canadians. But MEC also recognizes that we have a role to play in conserving them if they’re to remain healthy and accessible places that people can enjoy for years to come.

So we’ve launched MEC Homewaters, a multi-year, nationwide project dedicated to preserving Canada’s fresh water from coast to coast. It gives you a way to make a difference by connecting with your Homewaters.

We’ve partnered with eight regional freshwater organizations because we know meaningful change begins locally with the waters you love. When you connect with your local organization on the Homewaters site, they’ll reach out to you (and everyone else that signs up) to tell you how you can make a difference.

In support of this project, I’ve been speaking with the Canadian Senate and the BC Minister of Environment to advocate the importance of good freshwater policy and legislation to support the outdoor retail sector in Canada. But I’m also asking for your support to help MEC shout from the rooftops about this important issue.

Ways to help your Homewaters

  • Visit www.mec.ca/homewaters. Watch our video and share on social media.
  • Tell people you know how easy it is to show they care. Tell your family. Tell your friends too. Encourage as many people as you can to sign up with their local freshwater organization at www.mec.ca/homewaters.
  • Enjoy the feeling you’ll get knowing you’re doing something awesome for the freshwater places you love.

Over the coming months, you’ll be seeing more of Homewaters across local and social media, the MEC blog, email, mec.ca, and in stores – so stay tuned. In the meantime, think about your local lakes and rivers and how you can keep them healthy places to play for many years to come.
